Sacred Waters--Revisited

I created this piece from a series in 2021 where I began using mixed media items on canvas. I start with a vibrant background I feel resonates with the subject and begin moving the images around until the composition feels right. In this piece I was drawn to the image of the atom bomb which has associations with Japan, the only country to experience being attacked in such a way. I added images from a trip down Route 1 in California as the Pacific Ocean is shared between the two countries. I added a sunflower because sunflowers are known for their ability to absorb nuclear fallout. They also represent peace in many traditions, including my practice of Buddhism. When I made this piece I was thinking more about world peace and subduing violence. Today, it seems to relate to climate issues, as well, especially in the context of the fires in Maui.
