Sacred Waters
This was the third piece in the 2021 series of works I created incorporating collage with mixed media. This piece, like many of the others, centers on the history of our racialized world. The photograph in the center was taken from Cape Coast in Ghana, one of the world's largest historical slave ports, while the outer ocean images are of the east coast of the United States. The juxtaposition of these pictures are meant to invoke the "middle passage" which occurred across the Atlantic Ocean. I added flowers here to express mourning, as I have in previous works. When I painted this piece the flowers were the same color as the background. Though their shape has been preserved, their color has faded, now offering a sense of the history and loss I am attempting to evoke.
