Doorways
I created this piece in 2020 during the Pandemic and at the peak of the "racial reckoning" sparked by the death of George Floyd. It was the first formal piece I had created in a long time. I had developed a method for collecting and working with collage imagery several years prior, but had primarily used it in therapy work rather than formal expression. The pandemic was a profound time of exploration for many, including me. I created this in response to a prompt in a 30 day art journal challenge, which simply offered the word, "doorways." I immediately thought about access to versus denial of resources, especially in relationship with governments and caste systems. Through playing with the imagery I also explored thought as a doorway to ideal and/or horrifying places. The result is an acknowledgment of our tragic United States history combined with a fierce determination for peace and equality.
